"Wonderland Creek" by Lynn Austin

About the Book:

Alice Grace Ripley lives in a dream world, her nose stuck in a book. But the happily-ever-after life she's planned on suddenly falls apart when her boyfriend breaks up with her and she loses her beloved library job. Longing to run from small-town gossip, Alice flees to eastern Kentucky to deliver donated books to the tiny coal-mining town of Acorn. There Alice discovers that real-life may be far better than imagined.

My Opinion:

This was a great story!  It took me awhile to fully get into the story especially but once things got moving it was hard to stop reading, especially once Alice arrives in Kentucky and meets fellow librarian.  It's not your average run of the mill Christian romance/historical fiction book, but I think that is what adds to the charm.  I like the look at how the people in the hills of Kentucky lived, I could almost see the newspapered walls, feel my bones ache with the description of all the physical labor it took just to wash dishes or hang the laundry, and that is when a book is great - when you can 'feel' things about the story.

I must say I didn't like how easily Alice allowed herself to be kissed by a beau knowing they didn't have a future together, but that is probably my only complaint about the whole book.  I'm glad to see Alice go from a whiny 20 something to a woman as she learns what it takes to really make it in the world - I could see myself like Alice, reading books all day with nothing else to do but real life isn't like that and it was nice to see how developed all the characters became as the story continued.

**I was provided a copy of this book through Bethany House in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.
